Company Coming!

My mom, aunt, and grandma are coming to visit in two weeks! It should be lots of fun...first time to Haiti for my aunt and grandma. I've already started to prepare for them. I have almost all of the meals planned out, which is a big task down here when you have no refrigeration and very limited options of ingredients/food. I'm hoping to get up to Cap Hatien before them come to do some supply shopping, but that all depends on if I can find a ride and how bad the roads are.

*Happy Anniversary to my dear friends biz and Mike Mack! These two will be celebrating on an African Safari in two weeks- how fun! biz is one of the greatest friends a girl can have, and I miss her like crazy :)

On Tuesday, I drove up to a little village in the mountains with a friend. The "road" (more like a path) was really pretty. We drove through a river, passed beautiful grassy fields (a rarity in Haiti) and saw some cute houses.

A typical road after the rain... It gets pretty messy. Most people walk barefoot, carrying their shoes and then put them on once they get to their destination.
The last couple of weeks I've had bad luck with rain. I think about 4 days a week I get caught in a massive downpour while I'm out and about on my 4-wheeler.
Today, I'm headed to the market to do some shopping. Saturday is the main market day in my town. People come from all over to buy and sell their produce, animals, wood, charcoal, etc. I'm mostly looking for fruits and vegtables today. Haiti has some really great fruits! I make fresh juice almost every single day.
No school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday because it is 'Fet Pignon'- the anniversary of Pignon.

Here's the baby that was living mostly on sugar-water. He looks really good and is drinking the formula like there's no tomorrow! The only problem now is that I'm running low on formula. If anyone is interested in donating some formula, please email me at lindsdown@hotmail.com.

Future couple? I think they look cute!

Time for School

Ahh, the first day of school. Some loved it and some (preschoolers) told me they were never coming back again. All in all, it went smoothly and I am so excited for this school year.
I was out jogging as some of the parents were walking (or carrying) their little kids to school. It was really touching to see. They were nervous and anxious to send their little ones off to school just like moms and dads are in the States. But you could also tell how proud these parents were to be able to send their kids to school. Being able to give their kids an education is giving them hope for their future.

The kids that loved it....

The kids that hated it...

Can't believe it's September! Today I'm headed off to church, getting my hair braided, and doing some last minute work in my classroom. After that, I'm going to make a few visits. One is to a 4 month old baby who's mom is sick and can't breastfeed. Until I had met him, he'd been living on sugar water! My second visit is to check on a 6 month old girl named Love. Her mom doesn't want her or love her and therefore doesn't feed her enough, doesn't hold her, and doesn't bathe her often.
